Spring Clean Your Whole Self 🌿

There is something about spring that naturally makes us want to clear things out. We start opening the windows, letting the fresh air in, putting away the heavier winter clothes, clearing out cupboards and drawers, and noticing all the little things that have accumulated over the colder months. Even if you are not someone who particularly enjoys cleaning, there is something quite satisfying about a good spring clean and the feeling that comes afterwards when everything feels a little lighter and fresher.
But I also think spring gives us a lovely opportunity to look beyond the physical things around us and ask ourselves what else might benefit from a little clearing out. We are not just physical bodies. We carry our experiences, emotions, thoughts, habits, relationships and energy with us too, and sometimes what we need to clear out is not sitting in a cupboard at all.
🌿 Start with the physical
Of course, we can start with the obvious things. Open the windows, get some fresh air through the house, wash the winter bedding, clear out the pantry and have a look at what has been hiding in the back of the fridge. Spring is also a lovely time to look at the routines that may have slipped a little over winter. Perhaps you have been spending more time indoors, moving less, eating heavier foods or relying on convenience a little more than usual. Rather than approaching this with a sense of “I have been so bad and now I need to get back on track”, I prefer to think of it as gently bringing the body back into alignment with the season. More fresh, colourful foods, more movement outside, more daylight, more fresh air and more connection with nature.
This can also be a good time to look at the things we are putting into our bodies. Perhaps your supplement cupboard needs a little spring clean too! If you have bottles sitting there that you have not taken for months, or you are not even entirely sure why you are still taking something, it may be time to review what is actually still relevant for you. More is not always better, and sometimes simplifying is exactly what the body needs. This ties in quite nicely with this month’s article on supplement fatigue, because our health protocols should evolve with us. What your body needed six months ago may not necessarily be what it needs now.
💚 What are you carrying emotionally?
Then there is the emotional clutter, which can be a little harder to see. Winter can be a very inward season, and sometimes we come out of it carrying more emotional heaviness than we realise. We may have been tired, less social, dealing with stressful circumstances or simply operating in survival mode for a while. So perhaps this spring is a good opportunity to ask yourself what you are still carrying that you do not really need to take with you into the next season.
Maybe it is resentment about something that happened months ago, guilt about something you have not done, an old disappointment, a relationship that has been draining you, or simply the pressure you have been putting on yourself. This does not mean that we can simply “let go” of difficult emotions because the calendar has changed. Some things take time, and some things need to be processed rather than pushed away. But we can become more conscious of what we are carrying. Sometimes that might mean having a conversation you have been avoiding, setting a boundary, asking for support or giving yourself permission to stop feeling responsible for something that is not actually yours to carry. Sometimes it is simply acknowledging, “That was a really difficult season, and I am ready to move forward now.”
🧠 Give your mind a spring clean
Our minds can accumulate clutter just as easily as our homes do. To-do lists, emails, notifications, social media, work, family responsibilities, news, appointments, worries about the future and all of those little unfinished things can constantly take up mental space. Have you ever noticed how much lighter you feel when you finally deal with something that has been sitting on your mental to-do list for weeks?
Spring can be a lovely time to look at where your mental energy is going and whether everything you are consuming is actually serving you. Are you constantly scrolling or consuming information without giving yourself any quiet time to process it? Are you saying yes to things that you really do not have the capacity for? Are you filling every spare moment with something rather than allowing yourself to simply be?
And perhaps one of the biggest things we can spring clean is the way we speak to ourselves. If your internal dialogue is constantly telling you that you are behind, not doing enough, not healthy enough, not productive enough or not where you should be by now, perhaps that is one of the things that deserves some attention. We can be incredibly hard on ourselves, often in ways that we would never speak to another person. A little more kindness towards yourself is not about lowering your standards or giving up on your goals; sometimes it is simply recognising that you are doing the best you can with everything you are currently carrying.
✨ Clear the energetic clutter
For me, there is also a spiritual and energetic element to a seasonal reset. Whether you think of this as energy, intuition, spirituality or simply that feeling you get when something no longer feels right, I think we can all recognise that certain environments, people and situations can leave us feeling lighter or heavier.
Spring is a beautiful time to reconnect with the things that make you feel more like yourself. Get outside, put your feet on the grass, sit in the sunshine, spend time in nature, meditate, journal, listen to music, create something, spend time with people who make you laugh, or simply give yourself a little more quiet time.
You do not need to follow a particular spiritual practice for this to be meaningful. It is really about reconnecting with yourself and creating a little more space for the things that nourish you. I also love the idea of physically clearing your home with intention. Open the windows, let the sunlight in, move things around, clear out what you no longer need and allow fresh air and light into the spaces you have been spending so much time in over winter. There is something quite symbolic about it: out with what is stagnant, and in with what is fresh.
🌸 What do you want to take into spring?
And, of course, you do not need to turn your spring clean into another enormous project! You do not need a completely new diet, a twelve-step morning routine, a spotless house, a new exercise regime and a whole new version of yourself by the end of September. Sometimes a spring reset can be much simpler. Clear one cupboard. Go for a walk in the sunshine. Eat something fresh and colourful. Open the windows. Book the appointment you have been putting off. Have the conversation you need to have. Delete the apps that are taking up too much of your attention. Spend some time doing something that makes you genuinely happy.
Perhaps the most useful questions to ask yourself as we move into this new season are: What do I want more of this spring, and what do I want less of? More energy? More connection? More time outside? More creativity? More rest? More fun? More space? More time with the people you love? And, on the other side of that, what are you ready to release?
Spring is a season of renewal, but renewal does not necessarily mean becoming someone new. Sometimes it is simply about clearing away some of the layers that have accumulated and making a little more room to come back to yourself.
So, as we move into spring, perhaps give yourself permission to have a little whole-self spring clean — not because there is anything wrong with you that needs fixing, but because sometimes a little clearing, fresh air, sunshine and space is exactly what we need to feel ready for the next season of life. 🌸
